Dave Stein

I work at BCG (Boston Consulting Group) as a Lead UX Designer in our Gamma division. We provide strategic, product-based approaches to help major companies rapidly align supply and demand at scale, typically using machine learning (ML).

As a designer, I create interfaces that enable non-technical client users to 1 generate ML-optimized improvements to this supply/demand mismatch, 2 validate those recommendations using their direct knowledge of the business, and 3 implement them operationally through limited trials or complete roll-outs.

I also reduce the workload of technical users through automations and friendly applications, allowing them to focus on more interesting data science problems.

Process

In order to properly design for a comprehensive service or function, I need to understand the business problem at hand. This involves an analysis of processes, relationships, "user journeys", and the data that flows through all of these steps.

As a lead designer, I'm also responsible for the following:

  • Leading, mentoring, and empowering junior designers to develop high quality visual designs, interactions, and prototypes
  • Developing an information architecture
  • Identifying and targeting business- and product-level KPIs
  • Managing relationships with senior-level stakeholders (up-to and including managing directors)
  • Developing a cohesive business narrative and visual story to be leveraged between prototying, user testing, funding discussions, and sales and marketing efforts
  • Unifying quality and efforts between different teams through operational initiatives

Lastly, I typically take an outsized role in owning and guiding the product alongside product managers and executive sponsors. This is attributable to my background in business and management, my committment to being a strategy-driven designer, and my practical experience of working across product teams, analyzing user needs, and directly supporting commercial efforts in sales, marketing, and client conversations.
